There are so many expenses and wants a family has, and using YNAB prioritizes these things. It is worth the cost because it gives you financial peace (I know.Dave Ramsey uses that phrase). I suppose many budgeting apps could provide that, but YNAB has done it for me and that's more than worth the $5 a month that I spend on it. There's no guesswork, no anxiety, just total peace and confidence. YNAB gives me peace of mind: I never feel bad, guilty, or anxious about any purchase because I know (mathematically and logically, not emotionally) that my purchase is responsible and falls within my priorities as reflected in my budget. That being said, they have all these money issues that are non-issues with YNAB. My point in sharing those anecdotes isn't to bash my in-laws they're wonderfully kind folks and are frankly better people than I am. If you roll with the punches then this is no sweat! If you plan for them and assign those dollars a job you at least won't be surprised when tires wipe out your savings, because you knew those dollars were assigned to them.
